Cancers

Globally, nearly 1 in 6 deaths is due to cancer. Approximately 70% of deaths from cancer occur in low- and middle-income countries.

COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic pushed up to 40 million Africans into extreme poverty. Its persistent is estimated to cost Africa US$ 13.8 billion in lost GDP.

Disability

About 6.4% of African children under 14 years old have moderate or severe disabilities. Disability is also growing concern among an ageing adult population.

Environmental Health

African is facing significant environmental health challenges due to pollution, urbanization, and climate change. These factors have been associated with the emergence of new diseases.

Food security and nutrition

One in five Africans faced hunger in 2020. Hunger in Africa is driven by conflicts, drought, economic hardship and perpetuated by the recent COVID-19 pandemic.

Health system and policy

Most Africans rely on under-funded public health system. The system is plagued by challenges of access, coverage, quality, safety, efficiency equity and effectiveness.

Infectious disease

In Africa, five infectious are responsible for nearly 80% of the total infectious disease burden and claiming more than 6 million people per year.

Maternal and child health

Despite the progress made in this area, 57% of all maternal deaths occur on the continent, giving Africa the highest maternal mortality ratio in the world.

Noncommunicable diseases

The burden of noncommunicable diseases in African is gradually increasing and is predicted to overtake the burden of communicable diseases by the year 2030 

Sexual and reproductive health

Sub-Saharan Africa lags far behind on measures of sexual and reproductive health. It has the highest HIV burden and 1.1 million new infections in 2018.
