Flavia Matovu

Dr Flavia Kiweewa Matovu is a Ugandan based medical doctor currently working with Makerere University -Johns Hopkins University Research Collaboration (MU-JHU) in Kampala – Uganda, and an honorary lecturer with Makerere University School of Public Health, and a PhD person with University of Witwatersrand, South Africa. She have extensive research experience in research coordination and implementation with various prominent research institutions in Uganda. Since joining the Makerere University-Johns Hopkins University Research (MU-JHU) Collaboration in Kampala, Uganda in 2006, she has risen through the ranks to the level of Study Investigator. She was the site Investigator of record for the land mark ASPIRE Study – A Study to Prevent Infection with a Ring for Extended Use, also known as MTN-020, a phase III trial conducted through the U.S. National Institutes of Health-funded microbicide Trials Network on a phase III ARV based PrEP study using a dapivirine ring. Given the insights drawn from the extensive experience in epidemiological and clinical research, and her commitment to advancing public health, she joined the department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Makerere University School of Public health as an honorary lecturer four years ago where she is involved in teaching, supervising and mentoring students. As part of her PhD program, following an extremely competitive process and with my very first submission, she was awarded a modest R01 grant for new investigators by the US NIH to conduct research in the highly relevant but understudied area of bone health among HIV infected young women in resource limited settings. This grant as a critical step to support the Uganda Ministry of Health in understanding the best practices to optimize use of both HIV treatment and effective family planning methods among young HIV infected women in Uganda. Globally, the proposed study has potential to improve policy and clinical treatment and reproductive health guidelines for HIV infected women including those living in resource limited settings. She has published several articles and is a journal peer reviewer with the Cochrane HIV/AIDS Group, and Journal of Africa Health. Areas of expertise; Women/ adolescent reproductive health, ARV based Pre-exposure prophylaxis, HIV/PMTCT and metabolic complications of HIV and anti-retroviral therapy especially bone health.
