Olufunmilola Ogun

Olufunmilola graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria in September 1995 and completed her internship in August 1996 at the University College Hospital, Ibadan. She served for one year as a medical officer in Kaduna state, North Western Nigeria in the National Youth Service Corps programme from December 1996 – November 1997. Thereafter she worked in the private health sector, in Lagos state, until October 1998 when she returned to the University College Hospital, Ibadan for residency training in ophthalmology, which she completed in March 2005. From April 2005 – July 2006, she served as a consultant ophthalmologist in the Ogun state health service. In August 2006, she won a Shell Centenary Chevening scholarship to pursue a Master’s degree in Clinical Neuroscience at University College London, Institute of Neurology, Queen Square. Thereafter, she returned to the University College Hospital as a consultant ophthalmologist from August 2007 till date. Faced with the task of establishing a neuro-ophthalmology unit in the ophthalmology department, she travelled to University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada in July 2010 to undergo a clinical scholarship in neuro-ophthalmology, which she obtained in 2011. She returned to the University College Hospital Ibadan, in August 2011 and joined the University of Ibadan as a lecturer in the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, teaching neuro-ophthalmology and general ophthalmology in September 2012. She was promoted to Senior lecturer in October 2015. She is currently a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Ophthalmology, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan and Honorary Consultant in the Department of Ophthalmology, University College Hospital, Ibadan. She is passionate about teaching and is actively involved in residency training and the teaching of medical students and other paramedical authors. She serves as a trainer and invigilator for the West Africa College of Surgeons, Faculty of Ophthalmology. She gives regular lectures at the clinical ophthalmology and neuroophthalmology courses organized by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. She has contributed two book chapters and many academic publications in peer-reviewed journals. Her research interests include optic nerve disorders, ocular injuries, medical ophthalmology and social determinants of health care. She has received many scholarships and prizes including the International Council of Ophthalmology short-term scholarship, Shell Centenary Chevening Scholarship, ICO travel award, Commonwealth Eye Health Consortium long-term scholarship in paediatric ophthalmology &andadult strabismus. Her proposed PhD is in community medicine, exploring the psychosocial effects of visual impairment in adolescents. She is married with children.
