Khumbo Kalulu

A water and sanitation professional with over 15 years’ experience in academic, government and NGO settings. Currently, Khumbo is a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Sanitation in the Department of Environmental Health at Polytechnic, University of Malawi. He lectures water and sanitation modules in MSc programmes in the faculties of Engineering and Applied Sciences in the University of Malawi. The content of these modules ranges from technical aspects (designing of water, sanitation and wastewater treatment systems), and economic, environmental and public health considerations; and social aspects (the approaches to reach out and engage the communities) for the systems. Khumbo holds a BSc in Civil Engineering from the University of Malawi, an MSc in Integrated Water Resources Management obtained from University of Dar es Salaam (specializing in Water and Sanitation), an MBA from ESAMI/Maastricht, and a PhD in Applied Sciences (Environmental Sanitation) from the University of Malawi. His PhD focused on development of an intensified decentralised faecal sludge treatment (DEFAST) system for treatment of faecal sludge from informal settlements in the cities of Malawi. His post-PhD aspirations are to research on affordable water and sanitation systems to ensure that the urban poor have access to safely managed water and sanitation. He is experienced in conducting formative research, baseline surveys, mid-term evaluations, end-term evaluations, audits and context analyses in water supply, sanitation, hygiene, occupations safety and health, environmental and social impact assessment and climate change. These assignments have been done on behalf of government, NGOs and private institutions.
